Division Leader
With a 3-1 win over the Cleveland Indians, the Yankees are in first place in the AL East for the first time since April 16 of last year.
With this win, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte set the record for most saves by a reliever and starter combination with 58.

Weekly Update 5/19
Warning - I'm about to go on a rantRecord:20-24 (5th, third worst in the AL)
Past Week: 1-5
Team Avg: .255 (

-8)
Team ERA: 4.48 (
+0.18) (23rd
-4)
Power Rank: 20 (

The Yankees have hit rock bottom and broke out with the jackhammers. After posting a pathetic 1-5 record dating back to last Monday, the Yankees are is dead last in the AL East, four games under .500, and six games out of first. This is an absolute joke and the Yankees are playing disgusting baseball. It has come to a point where it is embarrassing and I am just wasting my time switching to the game. I don't know what they can do to fix this, but somehting needs to be done
NOW. Igawa, Hughes, and Kennedy have been as useful as a fork in a soup bowl. The hitting is horrible and Giambi's thong is not large enough for the whole team.
I've smelled rotton milk that was better than the hitting.Who's ColdThe entire Yankees roster. A combined 12 runs during the past week and not scoring more than two in a four-game series against the Rays. The Yankees hit a weak
.194, and could not drive the runner home as they left
79 runners stranded, an average of just over 13 per game.
The pitching was not all spectacular as well.
Chein-Ming Wang, the ace of the staff, suffered only one loss against the Mets on Sunday as his sinker wasn't working giving up 7 runs over 7 2/3 innings. Batters created a dent in
Rivera early last week giving up a lone run and taking the loss in a well pitched game by Wang.
Pettitte unraveled early in his start giving up five runs on four innings and taking that loss as well.
Who's Hot (with anger)Yankee Country. You play in New York, your expected to play your best. So far we haven't seen it.
+ Down for the Count
+My remote control from being tossed around after each loss.

Pettitte Opts Out

Andy Pettitte (15-9/4.05/141) opted out of his 2008 $16 million option and has filed for free agency.
This is coming just days after he said that he would play for New York or no one.
On top of this report, Pettitte is still contemplating retirement. Andy is 36 years old.

The New Guys
SP Andy PettitteHe may be new to the 2007 Yankees, but Pettitte needs little re-introduction to fans. The lefty returns home after three seasons with the Houston Astros, and the Yankees will be counting on Pettitte to pick up right where he left off, shooting for 15 wins or more -- plus a few starts in October.
1B Doug MientkiewiczSeeking an improved glove for first base, the Yankees signed one of the best in the game in Mientkiewicz. Though the 32-year-old has dealt with injury problems the last few seasons, he is expected to be part of a platoon with Andy Phillips or Josh Phelps at first base, and should help out the rest of the infielders. He's also close personal friends with Alex Rodriguez, having attended the same high school in Florida.
SP Kei IgawaA 27-year-old left-hander from Japan, Igawa was a three-time strikeout king in the Central League while pitching for the Hanshin Tigers. The Yankees have been cautious to note that Igawa shouldn't necessarily be compared to Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka, as the two pitchers are dissimilar, but both will be counted on for quick results. Igawa will be a point of interest as the Yankees sort out their rotation.
RHP Luis VizcainoAcquired in the Randy Johnson deal, Vizcaino has earned the nickname "Daily" for the frequency in which he takes the baseball from his managers. That will fit right into Joe Torre's thought pattern, and the Yankees believe Vizcaino could slot anywhere from the sixth to the eighth inning.
RHP Chris BrittonA reliever acquired from Baltimore in the trade of starter Jaret Wright, the 24-year-old Britton gives the Yankees another experienced arm in the middle-inning mix. He appeared in 52 games for the Orioles last year, posting a 3.35 ERA with two losses and a save.
1B Josh PhelpsPicked up in the Rule 5 Draft from Baltimore, Phelps spent all of last year at Triple-A Toledo, batting .308 with 24 home runs and 90 RBI. He'll need to beat out Andy Phillips to secure a roster spot.
