Featured Player: Lefty Weinert

Good evening, as we anxiously await the completion of tonight's Yankees Red Sox game, let us introduce the Player of the Day.
Today's player is pitcher Phillip "Lefty" Walter Weinert.
Lefty was born on April 21, 1902 in Philadelphia, Pennslyvania and made his major league debut with the hometown Athletic's on September 24, 1919. Keep in mind that the Athletic'e played in Philly before moving to Kansas City and their eventual Oakland home.
He was the youngest player in his first two season, a 17-year old in 1919, and an 18-year old the next season and was one of two 19-year olds in 1921.
In his only season with the Yankees in 1931, he went 2-2 in 17 games and 24 2/3 innings. He allowed two home runs and a total of 19 runs on 31 innings. A perfect mop-up or DOOM pitcher for today's game.
He average one strike out per inning in his lone season. He finished his career on June 29, 1931 with a poor 18-33 W-L record with a 4.59 ERA.
Weinert died on April 17, 1973, four days short of his 73rd birthday.

Philip "Lefty" Weinert never played for the Athletics. This posting is inaccurate. He started with the Phillies in 1919.
