Yet Another Management Reversal
We will not use Phil Hughes.
We will implement the Joba Rules.
We will fire Joe Torre.
Sounds familiar? Let's add another one to this list.
We will not pursue A-Rod if he opts out.
From Newsday:
"Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Newsday yesterday that the Yankees would offer arbitration to A-Rod. If A-Rod accepted, he would be contractually bound to the Yankees for 2008, and in line for a significant raise from his 2007 salary of $27 million.
Furthermore, the Yankees and A-Rod could restart negotiations on a long-term contract. [Scott] Boras could submit such a large figure in arbitration - say, $35-$40 million - that the Yankees could then feel inclined to try again on a multi-year pact with a more reasonable salary for 2008."
After further reading into the column, it does make a lot of sense on why they would offer arbitration.
All 30 teams must offer arbitration to their newly filed free agents by December 1. The players have a week to either accept of decline the arbritration. If a player declines, he remains a free agent. If he accepts, then welcome back to the team.
This plays into the MLB draft.
If a player declines arbitration, then the team is given a compensatory draft. That is how the Yankees drafted Joba Chamberlain.
Free agents are separated into classes depending on player ability. A-Rod is considered a class-A player. Because of this high class, if A-Rod does decline arbitration, the Yankees will be given two compensatory draft picks in the 2008 draft.
Quote Brain Cashman, "I'm definitely offering him arbitration. I want those draft picks".
If A-Rod does accept arbitration, the Yankees will not get the two draftees, and will be able to negotiate A-Rod's contract upon the conclusion of the 2008 season.
