Wang Pitches Gem
Sometimes beating the last-place Devil Rays can seem somewhat easy for the Yankees. But with Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang on the mound and the opposing pitcher dishing out walks en masse, it can look even easier.
The Yankees beat the Rays for the seventh time this season, 6-0, Friday night to extended their winning streak to four games.
Wang took a perfect game into the fifth inning and allowed just two hits in a shutout performance. The Devil Rays got only one runner past first base.
Holding the Devil Rays down is nothing new for Wang. He held them to one run in 8 1/3 innings on July 8 and was 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in two previous starts against them this season.
Wang gave up his first hit to Ty Wigginton to lead off the fifth. That was only after sitting on the bench for quite some time. While Wang dominated on the mound, his offense left little suspense to the game.
The Yankees twice came within a batter of hitting around. The first came in a two-run second inning highlighted by a bobbled double play ball that extended the inning. The Yankees scored another pair of runs in the fourth as Derek Jeter hit a double and four of the next five batters walked.
Tampa Bay starter Tim Corcoran walked six batters in 3 1/3 innings. Wang, meanwhile, walked just one and threw only 104 pitches.
Alex Rodriguez started the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and Bernie Williams smacked his eighth homer of the season in the sixth to round up the rest of the Yankees' scoring.
